When reality and dreams are odds, friendship challenged by choices, and the fear we all harbor that no one really sees us...

Life's hard and it doesn't get easier. That's something you don't have to tell Clem, Carver, Sampson, and Math. Already feeling abandoned by society, it had always been the four of them against the world. Or, so they thought

Can they find their way back to one another?

What readers are saying about the book...

  • I love the way this story is told, through the thoughts of four young men who are feeling lost and betrayed. Who has not felt that way, as we struggle to make sense of becoming adults? While questions persist through the story, the answers are there as you read on, and you're on the edge of your seat as the story reaches it's climax. Ms. Lieberman has crafted a very effective short story and it is well worth reading.
  • This book is truly a good read! The imagery that the author uses really paints a picture in your head while your reading. I love how the story is broken up into 4 sections - and each is the point of view of the main characters. It's a fantastic read!
  • SOCIETY’S FOUNDLINGS is a novella that tells the story of four young men on the cusp of adulthood who are all living in difficult circumstances. Clem, Math, Sampson and Carver are all related in some way (brother, cousins, friends) and live in extreme poverty, scraping by on meals of old popcorn one of them gets from a video store job, trying to survive abuse at home, depending on each other when they have no one else in the world. Life is hard, but they have each other and that fierce loyalty shines through even in the face of them having so little in the way of material possessions and security. I loved the way this shifted to show the story from each character’s pov. The slow reveal of information was very effective. I enjoy all of Ellie Lieberman’s books and particularly enjoy that the author writes across such a wide range of genres. 5/5 stars.
  • I loved this book. I loved seeing this friend group and the hard times they face and how said hard times could make them go against each other. But how their love and friendship was enough to make the hard times not seem as hard, and as long as they're together, they can get through anything.
  • This story held surprises from the first few pages to the last. The wide range and depth of character development kept me curious. The story centers of 4 young men and the ways they have found to support one another while still growing and over coming hardship. There are sweet reminders of simple pleasures. This is a story worthy of more than one read to grasp all it has to offer. I am in hopes these characters will live on in future stories.
  • Ms. Lieberman has captured the diverse emotions of her four characters, separating their struggles and yet binding them together on their journey to adulthood. Her ability to make the reader sympathetic towards each of her character's emotions is amazing.
I look forward to reading this new Author's future endeavors.
  • I really enjoyed reading this book. The author's prose is poetic and beautiful, her characters felt real to me and I liked getting to know each of them. She gave them a unique, distinct voice and personality. This story drew me in from the start to end. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading more books by this talented author.
  • In Society’s Foundlings Ellie Lieberman has created four uniquely diverse yet relatable characters. Lieberman captures the character’s struggles as they grow up. Her character development is rich and brings the characters to life as they almost jump off of the page and into the reader’s heart. As you read the book you can’t help but wonder what becomes of the characters in the as they grow older. Hopefully, Lieberman will revisit the characters in a future book. Lieberman is a young writer who has a grasp of what it means to fully engage her readers. She is an author to keep your eye on as she has a long writing career ahead of her. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Society’s Foundlings. It is a great reader for the young and old alike.
  • This is the story of four young men, each coping with the repercussions of surviving disjointed families. Each chapter tells the story from the perspective of one of the characters. I realized this early and was excited, as I've never encountered this literary device before.
It was a brilliant decision on the author's part. It was captivating seeing the story unfold from each character's eyes. Normally, when you read a book from a certain perspective, you think you know everything there is to know. But when you see things from each one of the character's eyes, you realize there's so much more to be had. I thoroughly enjoyed learning how each character interpreted each of their friend's actions and how they reacted. The characters came alive in this book. They were realistic, flawed in their own way, with their own quirks. I hope she comes back to them some day, maybe sometime in the future, to see how they've grown and how the relationships develop. The author also knows how to turn a phrase, which was impressive and brought even more to the writing. For this reason and those outlined above, I think this book is well deserving of the five stars I gave it.
